Metallnivåer i blod, urin och hår kan tjäna som ALS biomarkörer, föreslår studie

Flera metaller kan vara kopplade till risken för amyotrofisk lateralskleros (ALS), enligt resultaten av en liten studie i Italien. Resultaten anger att nivåer av metaller och andra väsentliga spårämnen i blod, urin och hår kan fungera som biomarkörer för att diagnostisera och följa upp ALS.

I blodprover ökade halterna av kalcium och koppar signifikant i ALS-patienter jämfört med friska individer. I hår ökade selen och zink signifikant i ALS-patienter. Urinivåerna av magnesium och selen minskade emellertid signifikant hos dessa patienter.

Nivå av neurofilament i cerebrospinalvätska kan bekräfta ALS-diagnos,
Studier har visat att ALS-patienter har en hög grad av neurofilament i cerebrospinalvätskan som omger hjärnan och ryggmärgen.

Denna koncentration kan härröra från sjuka neuroner som släpper ut trådarna, säger forskare.
De belgiska och tyska forskarna ville bestämma huruvida neurofilamentnivåer i cerebrospinalvätska kunde hjälpa till att diagnostisera ALS.

De undersökte nivåer av två neurofilamentproteiner i vätskan. En var fosforylerad neurofilament tung kedja (pNfH) och den andra neurofilamentlätta kedjan (NfL).
